How to Control Tagging on Facebook: A Step-by-Step Privacy Guide

To stop others from tagging you on Facebook or to control what happens when you're tagged, you can adjust your privacy and timeline settings. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to protect your profile and control tagging on Facebook:

1. Control Who Can Tag You in Posts

While you can't completely prevent others from tagging you in posts or photos, you can control what appears on your profile by enabling tag review.

Steps:

  1. Open Facebook and go to your profile.
  2. Click the down arrow (or menu icon on mobile) in the top right corner and select Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  3. On the left sidebar (or under settings on mobile), click on Privacy or Profile and tagging.
  4. Under Profile and Tagging, you'll see different options for controlling tags:
    • Who can post on your profile? Set this to Only Me or restrict it to Friends if you want more control over what appears on your timeline.
    • Who can see posts you're tagged in on your profile? Change this setting to Only Me if you don’t want others to see posts you're tagged in.
    • When you're tagged in a post, who do you want to add to the audience of the post if they can’t already see it? You can set this to Only Me to limit visibility.
    • Review tags people add to your posts before the tags appear on Facebook? Enable Tag Review to manually approve any tags before they are visible to others.

2. Enable Timeline Review

This setting allows you to review posts you're tagged in before they appear on your timeline.

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings & privacy > Settings.
  2. Click Profile and tagging.
  3. Under Review, turn on Review posts you're tagged in before the post appears on your profile.
    • With this setting enabled, you will get a notification every time someone tags you, and you can decide whether to allow the post to show on your timeline or not.

3. Limit Who Can Tag You in Comments

While you can't fully stop tagging in comments, you can reduce its impact by managing who can see and interact with your posts.

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings & privacy > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy from the left-hand menu.
  3. Under How People Can Find and Contact You, adjust settings like:
    • Who can see your friends list? Set it to Only Me to prevent others from easily finding you.
    • Who can send you friend requests? Set it to Friends of Friends for more control over who can tag you.

4. Remove Tags and Report Spam Tags

If you've already been tagged in unwanted posts or photos, you can remove the tags and even report spam.

Steps to Remove a Tag:

  1. Go to the post or photo where you’ve been tagged.
  2. Click the three dots (...) next to the post.
  3. Select Remove tag.
    • If the post is spam or inappropriate, you can also choose to report it.

5. Turn Off Facial Recognition

Facebook's facial recognition feature may suggest tags of you in photos and videos, so turning it off can help prevent unwanted tags.

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings & privacy > Settings.
  2. On the left, click Privacy, then select Face recognition.
  3. Choose No under Do you want Facebook to recognize you in photos and videos?

6. Adjust Privacy Settings for Posts You're Tagged In

You can limit who can see posts in which you're tagged, even if they appear on your timeline or elsewhere.

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings & privacy > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy from the left-hand menu.
  3. Find the setting Who can see posts you're tagged in on your profile?
    • Set this to Only Me or customize it to limit who can see the posts you're tagged in.
